Apologies for the long absence, but I think I may have finally got to the bottom of my problems.
I recently had my Vitamin D level tested with these people: http://www.grassrootshealth.net
It turns out that my level is rather low.
This would explain a great deal, regarding my health issues (including menstrual migraines).
My aim now, is to get my vitamin D levels up to the ideal range (using supplements/the sun - if we ever get any/tanning beds for short periods/eating oily fish), so that I can see if it makes a difference!
I am planning to test my levels again in about 2 months to see if there's any progress.
There are some very informative clips on YouTube that you may find interesting, here are a couple of really cracking videos:

and

(I'm not sure if those links are working, so you may need to copy & paste the link into your browser.)
There are also many books on Amazon etc that are very informative on the subject.
I would be interested to hear of other people's experiences with this and whether they managed to eliminate their menstrual migraines by getting their Vitamin D levels back up into the optimal range. Please comment if you have anything to add.
Thanks for reading!
Lou.

Hi Lou, thanks so much for posting this information. It's comforting to know I'm not battling this alone! I get 3 day migraines every 3 weeks and suspect a hormonal connection. I take a preventative, but you have to take more and more as the same dose stops working after a while - in any case, the tablets only make them a bit less severe and reduce duration to 3 days from anything up to 7 before. I will try the vit d haing seen your post. I saw a nutrition programme on channel 4 a few weeks ago suggesting high calcium intake + vitamin d supplements and low gi carbs for reducing pms, so the vit d makes complete sense. Good luck and hope it works for you! Sarah
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah,
DeleteSorry to hear your tablets aren't doing it for you.
I also watched that Channel 4 programme and it was like a lightbulb moment for me - I gave up drinking milk about 10 years ago. Since the programme, I started using goats milk as its easier on my tum!
That programme was what got me interested in vitamin D. I have been doing lots of reading about it and the YouTube videos were amazing. I felt sure that it would be involved somehow, and so decided to get my level tested. Sure enough, my level needs to be increased.
I am now taking a 2400iu capsule each day, which I'm hoping will be enough to raise my levels a bit.
Also, considering a trip to the Canaries! That should do it!
Funnily enough, whilst abroad a few years ago, I remember commenting on my lack of migraines...perhaps it was because I was producing adequate vitamin D! Who knows.
Best of luck with everything, let me know how you get on, and if you decide to get your D level tested etc.
Cheers, Lou
Lou
