Day 6 of cycle (September - October 09) the killer tomatoes!

Hi readers,

If you've been following my updates this cycle, you'll be aware that I've been having some considerable success this month (in fact, I'm on cloud nine!).

As you may have noticed, on days 1, 2 and 3, I did have mild headaches in the afternoon, and I believe this was due to what I was eating at lunchtime.
I checked back on what I'd eaten, and it turns out I'd had tomatoes (or tomato sauce based dishes) on all of those days.
On days 4 and 5, I deliberately omitted tomatoes, and felt absolutely great on those afternoons (unheard of!).

I put the fact that I haven't woken up with headaches down to the fact that I have been taking 5-HTP supplements.
They're best taken on an empty stomach, so I take one dose as soon as I wake up in the morning 7am, another dose at 12pm and another dose at 6pm. I make sure I take them an hour before eating.
This seems to be giving me such great results, that I can't wait for next month now to see if it was a one off!

Also, I've been following the diet & exercise recommendations in a book I got from the library, which is all about boosting serotonin naturally (see below).
It's a very interesting read.
Also, another book which is specifically about the 5-HTP supplements, which is also very informative.

  3. Hi Lou,

I was delighted to find your blog and feel less alone :-) I've ordered the 5-HTP book and look forward to hearing more of your journey. In the meantime I just wondered what dose of 5-HTP you're taking? Is it still working and what decision did you come to about taking it on a empty stomach versus with food ? I've read conflicting advice and being a bit of a wimp I'd rather avoid the nausea if I can!

By the way I've also been reading about Gelstat a 'Natural" equivalent to triptans (which I understand are not good in combintion with 5-HTP - its available in the US and maybe the UK although it hasn't made it to New Zealand yet.

Many thanks - your information is really helpful. Anne

  4. Hi Anne, thanks for posting your comment.

Yes, I am still using the 5-HTP, and it does still seem to be helping - I guess I'll know for sure when my next cycle starts :)

By the way, I do take it on an empty stomach (I keep them next to my bed and take them the minute I wake up, to get them into my system!), and I'm up to 300mg daily, divided up into 3 separate doses. It's best to start on a lower dose though, and work your way up with it.

As far as the nausea goes, I only had very slight nausea for a couple of days when I first began taking it. I barely noticed it (certainly wasn't as bad as morning sickness!).

I hadn't heard of Gelstat, but thanks for the pointer, I'll have a read around about that too. It's always good to have options!

I'm glad you've found my blog helpful, Lou :)
